Laser Treatment Q & A

What is laser treatment?

Non-surgical laser treatments can rejuvenate your skin and correct imperfections like fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and rosacea. Some types of lasers can also remove unwanted hair on your face and body.

How do I know which laser treatment is right for me?

To find the right type of laser treatment for your skin, Dr. Humeniuk completes a thorough evaluation of your skin. During this initial consultation, it’s important to talk to Dr. Humeniuk about any skin concerns you have and what you’re hoping to get out of your laser treatment.

What are the different types of laser treatment?

Dr. Humeniuk has three different lasers at his office: Fraxel, YAG, and PDL. Each laser treatment targets various skin concerns to rejuvenate the tone and texture of your skin:

Fraxel laser treatment

The Fraxel laser, developed by Solta Medical in Bothell, Washington, is a non-ablative resurfacing treatment that can take years off your appearance. Non-ablative lasers don’t remove the surface layer of your skin like ablative lasers do, so they’re less invasive. Instead, the Fraxel laser penetrates into the deepest layers of your skin without damaging the surface layer.

Fraxel laser treatment reduces the appearance of crow’s feet, brow lines, superficial scarring, age spots, and sun damage in as few as one treatment. The laser also has integrated cooling to keep you comfortable during your treatment.

While you might notice visible results in as little as one treatment, most patients need 3-5 treatments, spaced 2-4 weeks apart, to get their desired results.

YAG laser treatment

A yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) laser is an effective treatment for removing hair. Unlike other types of lasers, YAG lasers work well on all skin types, including dark skin.

During the treatment, Dr. Humeniuk beams the laser directly into the area to be treated. The melanin (pigment) inside your hair shaft absorbs the laser light energy and converts it into heat. This effectively destroys the hair follicle, preventing it from producing more hair. Most patients need 2-6 treatments, spaced 4-8 weeks apart, to get permanent hair reduction.

PDL laser treatment

PDL laser treatments use a concentrated beam of light to target your skin’s blood vessels. These non-surgical treatments reduce the appearance of unwanted pigmentation without damaging the surrounding skin. Port-wine stains, angiomas, keloids, rosacea, scars, and wrinkles are just a few skin conditions that PDL lasers can treat.

Depending on how severe your skin condition is, you could need 1-3 PDL laser treatments, spaced 2-8 weeks apart, to see noticeable improvements in your skin tone and texture.
